All About Mustard Algae

Mustard algae is a chlorine resistant algae which can prosper from factors such as phosphates, sunlight, water temperatures and carbon dioxide. A lack of circulation can also lead to this issue. Mustard algae resembles dirt, sand or even a stain. Brushing it can cloud it up and then it will later settle back down. Simply shocking the pool will not resolve the issue, so yellow algaecide is your ally in the fight against yellow algae. Yellow Quell and Yellow Algaecide, both of which contain 99% sodium bromide, should be added to the pool. Shortly after the pool should be shocked to oxidize contaminants and inorganic by-products. If you have a sand filter, make sure the sand is changed out every three (3) years to help prevent algae. Keeping your water chemically balanced, shocking weekly, regularly backwashing and rinsing, maintaining water filtration and using an algaecide will help keep the water clean and clear for swimmers.
