Losing Water: Leak or Evaporation

Many people find themselves losing water in their pool daily. Since we are located in the Carolinas, we typically get a lot of humid weather. This leads up to the big question… is it a leak or evaporation? Some leaks are not as noticeable as others. If you are losing more than one quarter of an inch of water a day, you should check to see if your pool has a leak.

Tip: Pools that are located in windy areas will typically lose more water to evaporation.

If you’re concerned that you have a leak in your pool, follow these steps:

Bucket Test

  1. Turn off the pool pump and fill the pool to normal operating level.

  2. Mark the water level in the pool with a piece of tape.

  3. Fill a bucket with pool water and mark the bucket with tape also. Place the bucket on the steps of the pool.

  4. Check both water lines after 24 hours. Note your results.

  5. Repeat this process with the pool pump turned on. Note results after 24 hours.

If you notice that the water level in the pool has dropped more than the water level in the bucket, you probably have a leak. If you notice that both levels have dropped about the same amount, the problem is more than likely due to evaporation.
