How To: Clean a Green Pool

A green pool is typically a sign of algae growth in the water. Algae can grow quickly when it has the right environment. Algae loves to bloom in warmer water with a lot of sunlight.

First, let’s go over what causes algae to bloom.

Unsanitized Pool Water- Make sure you keep the water properly balanced. Chlorine kills algae, so stay on top of testing.

Dirt & Debris in the Water- Algae feeds off of leaves, which contain phosphates. Keeping a clean pool will help to keep algae away.

Next, we’ll go over how to get rid of algae blooms. Skimming the pool

You’ll want to raise the free chlorine level high enough to break the combined chlorine level, you can do this by shocking your pool. Make sure you test the water to see how much shock is needed for the job.

The shock will kill the algae, leaving a clear membrane- making the pool look cloudy. You can then use a clarifier and let the water filter until clear, or use a flocculant treatment.

Lastly, we’ll go over some ways to prevent algae growth in the future.

Test the water and clean the pool weekly. Maintain a good free chlorine reading and clean any debris you see in the pool.

Use and algaecide. Algaecides are specifically formulated to prevent algae blooms.

Use minerals. Copper is a natural algaecide and you can typically find mineral floaters at your local pool store.
