When to Service Your Above Ground Pool: A Spring Checkup Guide

Spring is the perfect time to give your above ground pool a full checkup, and that doesn’t just include the water. Your equipment works hard behind the scenes, and if it’s worn out or due for replacement, it can lead to cloudy water, poor circulation, and higher chemical costs.

Let’s walk through what to look for and when it’s time to swap things out.

Sand Filters: When to Change the Sand

Your sand filter might look fine on the outside ーbut inside, that sand is doing all the heavy lifting.

Replace sand every 3-5 years. sand filter diagram

Signs its time:

  • Water stays cloudy even after filtering.
  • You’re backwashing more often than usual.
  • Poor filtration or water pressure.

Ionizers: When to Replace Minerals

If you’re using an ionizer, the copper node does not last forever.

Replace ionizer every 1-2 years.good ionizer versus used ionizer

Signs its time:

  • Increased chlorine demand.
  • Algae growth.
  • Visible wear or buildup on the unit.

Skimmer Baskets: Small but Mighty

Skimmer baskets are easy to overlook ー but they help to keep your pump and filter protected.

Replace as needed (every 1-2 seasons).broken skimmer basket

Signs its time:

  • Cracks or brittle plastic.
  • Warping or poor fit.
  • Debris slipping through to the pump basket.

Stay Ahead This Spring

The best time to replace pool equipment is before it fails, not after.
