Owning a pool doesn’t mean you need to be a pool expert. Sometimes all the equipment can feel confusing, especially when people start throwing around words like ‘multiport valve’ or ‘ionizer’. The good news? Most pool equipment has one simple job: keep your pool clean, clear, and safe to swim in. 

 

Here’s an easy breakdown of the most common pool parts and what they actually do. 

 

Pool Pump

 

Your pool pump is what keeps the water moving. Think of it as the heart of your pool system.

 

What it does: pump

  • Pulls water from the pool.
  • Pushes water through the sand filter. 
  • Returns clean water back into the pool. 

 

Why it matters: 

  • Keeps chemicals circulating.
  • Helps prevent algae growth. 
  • Keeps water from becoming stagnant. 

 

Pump Basket

 

Inside your pump is a small basket that collects dirt and debris that your skimmer basket missed.

  • Small Debris.

 

Why it matters: 

  • Protects the pump from clogging.
  • Helps water flow properly.

Skimmer Basket

 

The skimmer basket sits inside of the skimmer on the side of your pool.

Sand Filter

 

The sand filter is what removes dirt and tiny particles from the water.

Multiport Valve

 

The multiport valve is located on top of the sand filter and controls where the water flows. 

 

Settings: multiport valve

  • Filter: Filters water through the sand and sends it back into the pool. (everyday use)
  • Backwash: Cleans the sand filter. 
  • Rinse: Settles the sand after backwashing. 
  • Waste: Sends water out of the pool system and bypasses the sand. 
  • Recirculate: Bypasses the sand but circulates water in the pool. 
  • Closed: Stops water flow.
  • Winterize: Normal setting for winterization. 

 

Important tip: Always turn the pump OFF before changing settings. Rotate the multiport valve clockwise each time. 

 

Ionizer

 

An ionizer helps reduce bacteria and algae in your pool using minerals like copper and silver. 

 

What it does: ionizer

  • Helps reduce algae. 
  • Reduces bacteria. 
  • Can lower chemical demand. 

 

Benefits: 

  • Softer feeling water. 
  • Less chemical usage. 
  • Helps keep water clear.

FROG Leap System 

 

The FROG Leap system is designed to make pool care simple by slowly feeding chlorine into the water and using minerals on the side. 

 

What it does: frog leap

  • Helps maintain consistent chlorine levels. 
  • Reduces daily maintenance. 
  • Helps keep water cleaner with less effort.

 

Maintenance tips:

  • Make sure your water is balanced. 
  • Check cyanuric acid level. 
  • Replace cartridges as recommended.
