The Correct Way to Balance Your Hot Tub
Balancing your hot tub water is one of the most important steps to keeping clean, crystal clear, safe water. If your water is out of balance it can lead to cloudy water, skin irritation, and even damage your hot tub over time. Let’s dive into the correct way to balance your water.
Step 1: Test Your Water
Test for the following:
🧪pH
🧪Alkalinity
🧪Calcium Hardness
🧪Sanitizer (Chlorine, Bromine, Salt)
Step 2: Balance Alkalinity First
Always start with testing your alkalinity.
💦Ideal Range: 80-120 ppm.
💦If Low: Add alkalinity increaser.
💦If High: Add pH decreaser.
Step 3: Balance pH
pH measures how acidic or basic the water is.
🌞Ideal Range: 7.2-7.8
🌞If Low: Add pH increaser.
🌞If High: Add pH decreaser.
Step 4: Adjust Calcium Hardness
Calcium hardness protects your spa surfaces and heating elements.
🌊Ideal Range: 150-250 ppm.
🌊If Low: Add calcium hardness increaser.
🌊If High: Add fresh water.
Step 5: Balance Sanitizer Level
Sanitizers keep the water free of bacteria and contaminants.
🛁Ideal Range for Chlorine: 2-4 ppm.
🛁Ideal Range for Bromine: 3-5 ppm.
Step 6: Maintain Water Chemistry
Test and balance your water weekly.
💧Clean your filters weekly.
💧Drain and refill your spa 3-4 times a year.
