How to Drain and Clean a Hot Tub

Keeping your hot tub clean doesn’t have to be complicated. Most hot tubs need to be drained 3-4 times a year, depending on usage. Regular draining helps remove buildup from oils, contaminants, and dissolved solids that can make water harder to balance. Keep your hot tub fresh, clean, and running properly by following these simple steps.
Add Spa Pure System Cleanse (Recommended Once a Year)
- Add the System Cleanse into the water 92 degrees or higher.
- Allow the jets to run as directed on the back of the bottle.
- Cover the hot tub and let the system run for at least 8 hours.
- This helps to break down oils, buildup, and debris inside of the plumbing.
Locate the Drain Plug
- Most hot tubs have a drain plug located on the bottom corner of the cabinet.
- Pull the drain plug out all the way, open the drain plug, attach a hose pipe, push the drain plug back to allow water to flow.
- Allow water to drain away from the hot tub.
- You can also use a submersible pump to drain the hot tub faster.
Clean the Hot Tub
- Use a wet shop vacuum to remove any remaining water from the hot tub.

- Wipe down the shell with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive scrub pads.
- For any tough scum lines or staining, use a recommended spa surface cleaner to safely remove buildup.
Refill the Hot Tub Properly
- Place the garden hose directly into the filter housing inside of the hot tub.
- Begin filling the tub.
- This helps to prevent airlocks once your turn on the hot tub.
Balance and Enjoy

- Test and balance the water chemistry.
- Add your sanitizer and maintain as needed.
Important: Do NOT power on the spa when it is empty.
