Mastering Your Pools Water Chemistry

A clear pool doesn’t happen by accident, it happens with balanced water. If your pool has ever turned cloudy or green overnight, there’s a good chance your chemistry was off.

The good news? Keeping your water in check is simple once you know what to watch.Above ground pool with floats inside.

The Core Elements of Pool Chemistry

pH (7.2-7.8)

pH measures how acidic or basic your water is.

  • Too low: Causes skin irritation and corrosion to equipment.
  • Too high: Leads to cloudy water and reduces chlorine effectiveness.

Total Alkalinity (80-120 ppm)

This acts as a buffer for your pH, helping keep it stable.

  • Low alkalinity: pH swings drastically.
  • High alkalinity: Can cause cloudy water and scaling.

Chlorine (2-4 ppm)

Your primary sanitizer. Chlorine kills bacteria and keeps your water safe.

  • Low chlorine: Algae and bacteria growth.
  • High chlorine: Harsh on skin and eyes.

Calcium Hardness (200-400 ppm)

This measures the amount of total dissolved calcium in your water.

  • Too low: Water becomes corrosive.
  • Too high: Scale buildup on surfaces and equipment.

Cyanuric Acid (30-50 ppm)

CYA is what protects your chlorine from being burned off by the sun.

  • Too low: Chlorine wont last long.
  • Too high: Chlorine becomes less effective.A girl testing the pool water using a Taylor test kit

Simple Weekly Routine

  • Test your water at least once a week.
  • Adjust chemicals as needed, in this order: alkalinity, pH, chlorine, calcium hardness, cyanuric acid.
  • Shock your pool after heavy use, storms, or cloudy water.

Helpful Add-Ons

  • Algaecide: Prevents algae before it starts.clarifier and enzyme picture
  • Clarifier: Helps to clear up cloudy water.
  • Enzymes: Breaks down oils and buildup from swimmers.

Why Water Chemistry Matters

  • Swimmer Safety (no eye irritation or skin discomfort)
  • Equipment Longevity (prevent corrosion or scale buildup)
  • Sanitation (keeping bacteria and algae out)
